Isaiah 58:1-10

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?”

In ancient Israel, the people had begun making a fasting a show. They were ignoring the problems that existed in their society. There fasting was in vain because it was a show.  It's one thing to be seen doing something, It's another thing to do something to be seen. God told them the kind of fast He wanted. God was concerned with helping others. During this fast ask God to give you situations, things and people to pray about. Pray that God would break yokes and bring freedom to those that are oppressed. Whether they are oppressed by sin, by poverty or by bad living conditions. Pray and ask God to help you become the answer in 2020 to some of the problems that exist.  Pray that God puts you in a position to be a witness for His Son Jesus, and pray to be a greater blessing in practical and financial ways to the Kingdom of God

Thursday January 9th,

2 Chronicles 20:3 Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast  for all Judah. 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.

Has something ever happened in your life that "alarmed'' you? An alarm is something that alerts you. For some of us that alert might be time, for others it might be lack. Poor health decisions or poor spiritual choices can have us at a place that is alarming. Lack of guidance, not knowing what your next step should be can be alarming. The Bible says that the kings resolve was to inquire of the Lord and he proclaimed a fast. Not just for himself, but all the people of God.  When we come together to seek our God with prayer and fasting our God responds. He is able to fix those things that seem alarming. Look at what God says to the king and His people in verse 15 .....‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.

Do not be afraid or be discouraged.... What a powerful statement. If the battle is not yours stop fighting it and give it to God. Lets come together tonight and call on our God to fight those alarming battles in our lives.

Wednesday January 8th.

Daniel 1:8 But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.

Daniel 1:8

There are two possible reasons why Daniel refused the kings choice meats. The food possibly was forbidden by Jewish laws or it was offered to idols. Either way Daniel did not want to touch anything that would "defile" him. As we fast, let us ask God to help us to be sensitive to the things that defile us. Lets ask Him for strength to abstain from those things.

Tuesday January 7th Scipture.

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:1-4

Why food? You can live without a lot of things but you can’t live without food. Your very first basic need as a baby is food. Food is also one of your first forms of pleasure. It is not the nutritious value of food that is the problem in fasting, it's the pleasure of food. Your flesh craves pleasure and if left unchecked, it can cause chaos in your life. When you fast, you bring your mind and body under subjection to your spirit. Today, when you feel that hunger replace it with prayer.Just like the hunger that you feel, begin to crave after God. Tell the Lord in those moments, just like my body is longing for food, so I need you.God is the source of all our needs. Without God we would not even have physical food to eat. So as much as we need physical food, we need God more.
